Dear David: I love the energy, euphoria and focus I’ve been getting when I eat several tablespoons of cacao nibs at once but sometimes my face will get flushed and my heartbeat will race. What is going on biologically? Are these signs that I need to do less cacao or is this a temporary cleansing reaction which will go away eventually?
Dave: It’s probably that this person needs to do less cacao or needs to alchemically mix cacao with other things to tone it down a little bit. Cacao contains a very strong alkaloid. 1 to 2% of cacao is theobromine which is a heart medicine and actually they used to use theobromine, this is in the Naked Chocolate book and it’s, I’ve mentioned it before but from about 1890-1933, theobromine, a chocolate extract was used as the number one pharmaceutical medicine when somebody had a heart attack to get their heart pumping again.
LF: Wow.
DW: Yeah and that is something that nobody ever talks about but it should be talked about because, my God, a chocolate extract? to get your heart pumping again!? And the whole thing about chocolate and Valentines day and chocolate and the heart and it’s all related, for real.
